How does Hypnosis Work?
While the conscious mind is relaxed, under hypnosis, suggestions to change your behaviour and thinking can be made more directly to your subconscious mind. Suggestions are based on the psychology of learning. Because of these two factors, you learn rapidly to become more motivated to overcome your problem and achieve your goals. You act on the suggestions your subconscious mind wants to accept, and your behaviour and thinking does change.Hypnosis works because of the way your mind functions. It uses the unique capabilities of the mind to accept and act upon positive suggestions while you are in that state.
How is Hypnosis Induced?
The general procedure involves relaxing in a comfortable position (e.g. in a recliner chair), breathing in deeply, concentrating your eyes on some object (e.g. spiral) and listening to your therapist talking about how you will relax and drift into the hypnotic state. After a short while, your eyes close, you find yourself feeling the hypnotic state and listening to the therapeutic suggestions to overcome your problem.
Later, your therapist brings you back to the waking state. A number of techniques to induce hypnosis can be used.
What does it Feel Like under Hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a deeply relaxed body state where it is usual to experience feelings of comfort, well-being and mild drowsiness. Other feelings of sinking, heaviness or floating depend on the person and depth of state. You are always totally conscious and aware of your surroundings. The concentration of your mind is greatly enhanced.
Is Hypnosis Safe?
Hypnosis is really a deeply relaxed state between true sleep and awake, similar to that produced by yoga and meditation. You are in control of yourself all the time even though you feel you are drifting or whatever. Such feelings are not strange but are truly natural of relaxation. You won't do anything you wouldn't normally do, and you only accept suggestions you want to.
Afterwards, you will feel refreshed and benefit by changing in a desirable way. If an emergency should occur (e.g. fire) or if you should go to sleep you would wake up of your own natural response.
What Problems can be Treated?
If behaviour or thinking are involved in your problem then hypnosis can be used, e.g. with smoking, overweight, nervous tension, emotional upset, anxieties, fears, nail-biting, headaches, insomnia, depression, frigidity, impotence, premature ejaculation, studying, concentration, exam anxiety, memory, asthma, shyness, confidence, stuttering, bedwetting, pain, child-behaviour problems, marital difficulties, sales motivation, childbirth, dentistry and surgery.Could I be Helped using Hypnotherapy?
Almost everyone can be hypnotized. Subjects who are motivated to overcome their problem, understand what hypnosis involves, and just relax, are very responsive to hypnotic suggestions.Subjects can become even more responsive with increased motivation, relaxation training, by a number of hypnosis sessions and by learning and practising self-hypnosis.
By also using other behaviour modification techniques greater and faster change is possible. Other techniques include systematic desensitization, muscle tension relaxation training and image rehearsal.
More than ever before people are turning to using clinical hypnotherapy to overcome problems and to enable self-development, to achieve goals of satisfying achievement, interpersonal relationships and happiness.
Hypnosis provides an exciting opportunity - it uses the mind's ability to accept and act upon positive suggestions to help you.
