What is Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT)?

neuromuscular therapy (NMT) has emerged as a significant methodology for assessing, treating and preventing soft tissue injuries and chronic pain.

Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT) is a whole body approach that seeks to find and treat the cause of pain rather than simply addressing the symptoms.

NMT uses specific massage therapy and flexibility stretching to eliminate the causes of pain patterns. The aim is to relax muscles so that circulation can increase, enabling the body to return to normal balance and range of movement.

NMT can help sufferers of symptoms such as back and pain, headaches, carpal tunnel and sporting injuries.

The History of NMT

NMT was first established 50 - 60 years ago simultaneously in North America and Europe. Since then it has emerged as a significant methodology for assessing, treating and preventing soft tissue injuries (muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia) and chronic pain. It is widely practised alongside mainstream medicine worldwide. NMT has a foothold in both holistic and traditional medicine.

What about Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

The body relies on a healthy lymphatic system to carry excess fluid and wastes back to the blood. Without this system in good form, the tissues lose health and healing is slowed. In healthy circumstances, lymph is moved efficiently with exercise and proficient breathing. However when we become stressed, immobile (e.g.: during hospitalisation) or have an injury - the lymph drainage can become sluggish and cause fluid build up, low energy levels and in some cases dis-ease. Lymphatic drainage techniques will speed healing and increase energy levels. It is very effective for acute sports injuries. Lymphatic drainage is ideal pre/post surgery.

Do you treat Children?

Massage is not just for adults. Children also suffer from headaches, postural problems and stress. Those accidents from trampoline falls or bikes can cause lasting problems. Children’s sessions are shorter - contact us for more information.

How many treatments will I need?

Typically 4 -6 treatments are required initially. You will then be reassessed to formulate another treatment plan. Your recovery will also depend on how long you have been in the pain and what you do yourself outside of treatment time e.g.: stretching and postural changes.

What do I need to wear during a massage?

The most important thing is for you to feel comfortable. Therapeutic massage is most effective when applied directly to your skin which means it is preferable for you to be partially unclothed (wearing underwear). You will be appropriately draped at all times of your treatment. However, you do not have to do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable and we can discuss whatever level of dress works for you. For your first session you will be required to bring swimwear or shorts and a sports top for your postural analysis.

How long are the sessions?

Generally most sessions are for an hour. However, with discussion, these can either be lengthened or shortened.

Can I claim ACC?

No. the massage industry is not regulated therefore cannot be an ACC provider. However, receipts are issued and may be able to be claimed if you are self employed and your pain is affecting your work output.

How much will it cost?

All treatments are based on a price of $80 per hour.
*All prices are subject to change
